Pattern hair loss

Pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair thinning in both men and women. It is driven largely by genetics and hormones, and several ingredients now have strong evidence behind them, all delivered here as topical treatments only.

Understanding pattern hair loss

  • Common causes of pattern hair loss

Androgenetic alopecia — Hair follicles become increasingly sensitive to DHT, shrinking and producing shorter, finer hairs over time. The most common cause of hair loss in both sexes.

Genetics — Strongly hereditary from either parent’s side; influences likelihood, onset age and progression.

Contributing factors — Stress, medications, thyroid issues and nutritional deficiencies can worsen it, though they are not usually the root cause.

  • Symptoms to look out for

    • Gradual thinning at the crown, temples or parting
    • Receding hairline (more typical in men)
    • Diffuse thinning across the scalp (more typical in women)
    • Reduced hair volume or density
    • Finer, less thick-feeling hair over time
  • How is pattern hair loss treated?

We offer topical treatments only, applied directly to the scalp rather than taken as tablets.

Minoxidil — Prolongs the hair growth phase and increases follicle size. 62% of men saw regrowth after a year of consistent topical use in trials.

Finasteride — Blocks conversion of testosterone to DHT, addressing the hormonal driver directly. Most evidence comes from oral finasteride; our topical formulation is designed to act locally on the scalp while limiting systemic absorption. Well-established for men; used off-label in women under prescriber guidance.

Adenosine — Increases thick hair ratio and prolongs the growth phase. Shown effective in topical trials for both men and women.

Melatonin — Supports follicle health as an antioxidant; topical studies show improved density and growth phase, well tolerated.

Cetirizine — An antihistamine shown to improve hair density when applied topically, useful if minoxidil is not well tolerated.

Niacinamide — Calms scalp inflammation, supporting a healthy growth environment.

Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) — Strengthens hair strands and supports the scalp barrier.

  • How to get the best results from my treatment

    • Be patient; most people need 4–6 months of consistent use to see change
    • Apply it exactly as directed; inconsistent use is the most common reason treatment does not work
    • Expect some initial shedding; this is common in the first 4–6 weeks as hair cycles reset
    • Start early; treatment works best at preserving existing hair, not regrowing long-lost hair
    • Do not stop abruptly; ongoing use is needed to maintain results
  • When should I see a dermatologist instead?

We offer topical prescription treatments only, and do not prescribe oral medication such as tablet finasteride or minoxidil. See a dermatologist or GP if:

    • Your hair loss is sudden, patchy, or in distinct bald spots rather than gradual thinning
    • You notice scalp scarring, redness or scaling alongside hair loss
    • You have signs of an underlying condition, such as significant fatigue, weight change or menstrual irregularities, that could point to a thyroid or hormonal cause
    • Your hair loss is not improving after a reasonable course of topical treatment
    • You would prefer an oral treatment option, which is not something we offer
    • You would prefer a confirmed diagnosis rather than treatment based on your symptoms alone
